Fay Shutzer brings an emotional depth to her art. Originally trained and licensed as a psychologist, she now pursues two career paths that rely on imagery: one that uses words, the other, paint. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, Fay also holds a Masters and Ph. D. in School Psychology from New York University, and two postdoctoral certificates, one in child and adolescent psychotherapy from the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health and the second from New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychology and Psychoanalysis.

If you are wondering how art fits in, Fay states "Art has always been part of my life. I was born in Massachusetts and grew up on a dairy farm. My parents had a strong interest in art, my mother as a lecturer at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and my father as an avid collector of emerging art." As a small child, Fay requested art lessons and her parents found a local art teacher to work with her. Even at a young age, she longed to be able to express herself through art. An exhibit of her work in a youth art show led to a summer job drawing portraits in a restaurant. In college, though captivated by her studio art classes, she majored in psychology. "I saw myself as 'artistic' but not as an artist. Looking back, I wonder how I made the distinction. "

After spending time on Cape Cod when her children were young and where she was inspired by the landscape, the light and the art community, Fay became a student of landscape artist Ann Packard and was introduced to working in oils. Training continued at the Art Students League in New York, The Scottsdale Artist's School, Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill and The Provincetown Art Association. Currently, she divides her time, focusing primarily on art, with a small private practice in psychology. Her landscapes reflect her New England roots and her passion for light on rural buildings, although as a resident of New York City, there is a place for cityscapes as well. She is currently represented by the Left Bank Gallery in Wellfleet, Massachusetts and the Gallery of Graphic Arts in New York City.
