Gavin Fitzsimons
Born 1978 in Belfast, Gavin sold his first oil painting at the age of 12. He now regularly contributes his work with the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin and the Royal Ulster Academy. Forthcoming exhibitions are planned for Dublin and Northern Ireland. He also has a keen regard for fund raising and charity exhibitions. His work can be seen in a number of collections, including Queens University, Castle Espie Wildlife and Wetland Trust and The City Hospital. He has clients as far a field as Canada and the U.S. For Gavin, every step in the process of crafting a painting, from conception to signature is part of the creative experience. This interest stems from his scientific training in the laboratory as a biochemist. He often likes to mull the pigments and prepare his own mediums. When working in oils, he will often purify his own walnut and linseed oil and use thickening products to achieve the desired effect. Gavin uses bright pigments to create illusion and to make the paintings appear to emit their own source of light. His skilful use of the palette knife, combined with textured paint ensures a seemingly effortless impasto effect. He now lives and paints from his studio in Bangor, Co. Down.
